About your doctor
Dr George Liang
Dr George Liang is a breast, endocrine and general surgeon, based in Castle Hill, in Sydney’s West.
Dr Liang was born in Borneo, before moving to Holland during his childhood and ultimately relocating to Australia, where he was accepted to study medicine at the University of Tasmania. It was whilst he was completing his medical training in Tasmania that he discovered a passion for breast and endocrine surgery, which would eventually determine his field of surgical specialty.
"In breast and endocrine surgery, every presentation is different. There are different quadrants, different tumours, and different treatment options available," Dr Liang says. "It's a problem solving-exercise, which begins with understanding the patient's situation: their family, their work, the life they want to return to, and then using the medical and surgical options at our disposal to help them get back to that. It's incredibly rewarding."
A native speaker of both Mandarin and Malay, Dr Liang says that even when he doesn't understand a person's native language, he's developed a medical short-hand that helps him quickly identify, treat and meet their needs.
Dr Liang also works with the next generation of medical students by teaching surgery through the University of Notre Dame at the Auburn Hospital. Its important work for Dr Liang, who finds the act of giving back and being of service extremely rewarding.
Dr Liang’s life outside of surgery involves being a part of his local community, as well as spending time with his wife and young son, who was born early in 2022. When he has time away from work, he enjoys nothing more than traveling — both internationally and closer to home — to new and interesting places with friends and family.
